Why we write the spec before we write the code

Every project at Code Wealth starts with a signed-off technical spec. It feels slower for one week — and saves months later.

The most expensive sentence in software is "we'll figure it out as we go." It sounds agile; in practice it means the client pays for discovery disguised as development.

So we invert it. Before a sprint starts, we run structured workshops, map the domain, and write a technical spec: data model, integration points, edge cases, and what is explicitly out of scope. The client signs it — not because it's legal cover, but because it's shared understanding.

The result is that our build phases are boring in the best way. Weekly demos show steady progress instead of surprise pivots, and 'done' has a definition everyone agreed to months earlier.

A spec is not bureaucracy. It's the cheapest place to have the hard conversations — before they're load-bearing.
